Last month, LeBron James’ More Than A Vote organization launched its “We Got Next” campaign in an effort to increase the number of poll workers in Black electoral districts. Now, two weeks later, it’s already making an impact.

On Wednesday (Sept. 30), More Than a Vote announced that it has recruited over 10,000 poll workers ahead of the November election. James partnered with the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund to launch the campaign.

Barack Obama praised the NBA superstar’s efforts and even appeared virtually for Wednesday’s NBA Finals game to thank 40 first-time poll workers that were recruited by More Than A Vote, including Shaquille O’Neal.

“Always look forward to watching the NBA Finals — and tonight I had the chance to thank a great group of first-time poll workers with @morethanavote,” Obama tweeted. “It’s critical that everybody votes in this election — by mail or in person if you can.”

“We see you Mr President. Thank you!!!” James tweeted back to the former POTUS.

On the More Than A Vote website, interested poll workers can easily upload their names, contact information and zip code to learn more about working the voting booths in their area. The website notes that poll workers will receive PPE, training and — in some cities — a flat rate daily payment.

“We have already seen the galvanizing force of youth and Black voices across the country in the wake of the death of George Floyd,” the website reads. “Voices of those standing in the streets in protest chanting ‘Black Lives Matter’ and imploring those in power to take notice.”

“You marched. You demanded change. Now, we’ve got to take advantage of the moment... More Than a Vote, the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, and Power The Polls are asking you to fight voter suppression by serving as a poll worker to ensure everyone in your community can safely vote this fall.”

Along with James, Draymond Green, Damian Lillard, Brittney Griner, Bun B, Michael Vick and more have joined the campaign. Get involved here.
