Charlamagne says Kanye West’s ‘Donda’ album sounds “dated”

“It’s an hour and 49 minutes long. So, like Kanye West, it can be exhausting,” he said.

Charlamagne Tha God is not feeling Donda, Kanye West’s latest album. During Monday’s (Aug. 30) segment of “The Breakfast Club,” Charlamagne, DJ Envy and Angela Yee shared their thoughts on Ye’s newest project. “Upon first listen, it was lackluster for me, you know, upon first listen,” Charlamagne said. “It’s an hour and 49 minutes long. So, like Kanye West, it can be very exhausting.”

Charlamagne then went on to say that if the Chicago emcee had scaled the LP down to 12 songs, it would have been “a great album.”

“But 28 songs with all the part twos, an hour 48 minutes, it’s too long and it drags to me. And the music sounds kinda dated,” he added.

The radio host did say that he liked the “Keep My Spirit Alive” and “Jesus Lord” tracks. However, DJ Envy’s criticism was a little harsher and he revealed that he hasn't even listened to Donda at all.

“This is the reason I haven’t listened to the album and I don’t necessarily want to listen to the album,” Envy said. “I just don’t like the way he treats people and I think he’s a clown. Clown, like a circus clown with the stupid jacket and big shoes. Clown.”

Although some people aren’t feeling Donda, the project is breaking records. As REVOLT previously reported, the 27-song LP garnered 100 million streams on the Global Spotify Chart on Sunday (Aug. 29), becoming the platform’s second-biggest album debut of all time. Kanye’s 10th album occupied all Top 10 spots on Spotify’s U.S. Chart, moving “Stay” by Justin Bieber and The Kid LAROI — the previous No. 1 single — down to No. 11. Out of 27 songs on the album, 25 debuted within the Top 40.

Donda is also projected to hit No. 1 on the Billboard 200, selling over 300,000 units in the first week. It will become the biggest debut this year so far.
