It’s the end of an era. 2 Chainz is done with trap music. On Saturday (July 17), 2 Chainz took to Twitter to announce his upcoming project will be his last trap album. “This gone be my last trap album, enjoy,” he tweeted.

The So Help Me God! rapper didn’t go into details as to why he’s quitting trap or what led to his decision. Since 2012, Chainz has released six solo studio albums. He’s also put out a handful of EPs and 10 mixtapes. Sonically, all of them have been considered trap music. It’s the genre he’s helped push forward for over a decade and his contributions are noteworthy.

Recently, Tity Boi celebrated the four-year anniversary of Pretty Girls Like Trap Music with a one-of-a-kind NFT titled “Pretty Girls Like Trap NFTs.” Before the Atlanta Hawks were eliminated from the NBA playoffs, Chainz sat courtside cheering his team on. He also performed for Hawks fans during one of their conference finals games. In an Instagram post, the former “Most Expensivest” host revealed that he invested in a concentrated solar power firm called Heliogen and is shooting his first film — The Enforcer — in Greece this year.

Musically, the 43-year-old Georgia native has shown up on a couple of features of late, including BeatKing’s “SDAB,” and Yung Bleu’s “Baddest.” Besides his tweet “I’m finna drop another project” in February, Chainz has not officially announced that he’s working on a new album. He has shared pictures and videos of himself working on music in the studio. But fans can only imagine for now what his “last trap” album will consist of.

In a 2017 interview with Rolling Stone, the multi-platinum Grammy Award winning rapper explained how trap artists are the new “pop stars.” “Trap rap is pop now,” he said. “People’s ears have adjusted to what we have to say and how we say it.”
