Back in July, the late DMX competed with Snoop Dogg in a Verzuz that celebrated their years-long discographies. The battle saw the Ruff Ryders star in great spirits as he rapped and danced alongside the West Coast emcee. As the entertainment platform was created to honor music legends, it allowed X to get his flowers while he was alive. Now, much like the rest of the hip hop community, the Verzuz team is mourning his death.

The Verzuz family is deeply saddened by the loss of a cultural icon and a friend: Earl ‘DMX’ Simmons,” read a statement posted on the platform’s social media accounts.

Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and loved ones. DMX always showed his authentic self to the world, especially during the painful moments, and for that he was one of a kind. His music, his spirit, and who he was, will continue to live on in the millions of fans around the world.”

Verzuz exists to celebrate the creatives and give them their flowers,” the statement continued. “The DMX we all saw is the DMX we knew and will continue to remember. DMX forever!”

Following DMX’s tragic death, Snoop posted a clip of their epic showdown alongside a few words. “What they thought was a battle ended up being a family reunion of 2 doggs who loved everything about each other,” he wrote. “Thank U X for loving me back. C u when I get there.”

The DMX and Snoop Dogg Verzuz is one of the many memorable highlights circulating the web in the wake of X’s passing. The posts express fans’ appreciation for the Verzuz platform for placing X on a platform where he was able to receive an overwhelming amount of love and support from his supporters.

“DMX really got to feel that incredible love for his life’s work when him and Snoop did Verzuz. Most people don’t get that. Most people get their flowers after they’re gone,” one fan tweeted. “I’m glad DMX got his flowers.”
