Before enigmatic rapper MF DOOM tragically passed away last year, he began diving into the digital world of non-fungible tokens (NFT). In fact, MF DOOM died — October 31st, 2020 — one day after the auction ended for his history-making augmented reality (AR) signed masks NFT.

Yesterday (March 12), the bidding ended on MF DOOM’s second AR NFT offering, which included signed black and green sludge masks, DOOM’s green metal mask, and a mummy mask that cost quite a bit of cryptocurrency. Each of the signed masks sold for between 9.5000 and 450.0000 in ethereum on the NFT marketplace Illust Space.

Illust Space is a unique NFT platform that allows collectors and artists to display their art in the real world by using geoplacement and web AR. So, the rare MF DOOM masks can technically be worn by using the face tracking library on Ilust Space’s site.

DOOM’s wife, Jasmine Dumile, and Rhymesayers Entertainment worked with Illust Space once again to produce the rapper’s second NFT AR mask collection.

In a statement regarding their partnership, Illust Space said, “sadly, MF DOOM passed on Oct 31st, 2020, one day following the close of the original Illust Space beta auction making this one of MF DOOM’s final collaborations. Due to blockchain’s immutable and decentralized ledger technology, all of MF DOOM’s AR NFT collection will be available for future generations of fans and collectors, creating a new model for royalties and posthumous creative control legacies.”

Before their original collaboration with DOOM, Illust Space’s CEO Rob MCarty said linking with the rapper “represents a tipping point for augmented reality, the NFT market, and the ubiquitous digital layer that is a battleground for big tech.”

“With Snap, Instagram, Niantic, Adobe, Microsoft, Alphabet, and Apple fighting for augmented reality platform dominance, the least we can do is ensure an equitable system for artists to create, sell, and track their work,” he added.

DOOM’s estate will receive royalties worth 10 percent of the proceeds from the auction to fund future creative projects.
