To help encourage residents to wear protective masks during the coronavirus pandemic, the city of Inglewood took inspiration from Future’s 2017 hit “Mask Off” to create a public service announcement for their “Mask On” campaign.

The video begins with an announcement mandating the Inglewood residents wear a mask to help slow the spread of COVID-19 before the song kicks off with lyrics saying for everyone to keep their masks on while in public until it’s safe again.

“2020, the year that we advance,” the song starts to the beat. “But the coronavirus threw a wrench up in them plans / Had to adjust, and make it interesting / Gimme six feet, that’s social distancing / Wash your hands, protect your fam / And we’ll be back soon as we can.”

The PSA also tours the city of Inglewood, highlighting several notable local spots as well as all the different types of individuals that make up the people who live there such as students and essential workers with their masks on.

“Inspired by the 7x platinum hit by rapper Future, The City of Inglewood puts a public health spin the song to urge everyone in the community, to KEEP THAT MASK ON while in public,” a description of the video reads on YouTube.

Future himself has been utilizing the popularity of his multi-platinum hit song too with his own “Mask On” campaign that he launched to provide essential workers in his hometown of Atlanta with over 100,000 protective masks earlier this year. The campaign was in collaboration with his FreeWishes Foundation and Atlanta Sewing Style.

The handling of the pandemic in America has allowed the virus to quickly spread. According to the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health, there have been over 200,000 confirmed cases of coronavirus in the county and approximately 5,918 deaths from the illness. In Inglewood, 89 people have passed away from COVID-19 and over 2,000 people have had it.
