Famed actor Chadwick Boseman was laid to rest less than one week after he tragically passed away from colon cancer, which he was privately battling for the last four years, The Associated Press is reporting.

As millions of fans around the world know, the talented thespian, who made sure to inspire in the projects that he took on during his career, was 43 years young when he succumbed to the illness at his home in Los Angeles, as he was surrounded by family members including his wife. Just six days later, Boseman returned to his home of South Carolina for a private funeral service. AP confirms this news from a death certificate that the outlet received on Monday (Sept. 14).

The service took place at the Welfare Baptist Church Cemetery in Belton, South Carolina. This location is approximately 11 miles from the star’s hometown of Anderson, which held a public memorial for their fallen hometown hero the day before his burial.

“You know, he was always reading and always trying to get better,” Anderson Mayor Terence Roberts said of Boseman. “So, from a work ethic point of view, it just doesn’t happen overnight. He showed us that we’ve got to hone our skills and just persevere.”

Although he had surgery in 2016, right after his diagnosis, to remove the cancer, AP reports that Boseman’s death certificate claims that in March of this year, he underwent laparoscopic surgery because the cancer had spread through his body.

Since his sudden passing, a number of Boseman’s closest friends and colleagues — not to mention fans — have paid tribute to him on social media.

“Chadwick was a man who made the most of his time, and somehow also managed to take his time. I didn’t know him for long, but he had a profound effect on me in the time that I did,” Black Panther co-star Lupita Nyong’o wrote. “When we came together to make Black Panther, I remember being struck by his quiet, powerful presence. He had no airs about him, but there was a higher frequency that he seemed to operate from.”

The movie’s director, Ryan Coogler, even penned: “But it is with a heavy heart and a sense of deep gratitude to have ever been in his presence, that I have to reckon with the fact that Chad is an ancestor now. And I know that he will watch over us, until we meet again.”
