One-time republican presidential nominee and former Godfather’s Pizza CEO Herman Cain has died from Coronavirus, a statement from his official Twitter account confirmed on Thursday (July 30). Cain was 79 years old and was hospitalized for COVID-19 earlier this month.

“Cain, who recently joined Newsmax TV and was set to launch a weekly show, died in an Atlanta-area hospital where he had been critically ill for several weeks,” Newsmax reported on Thursday. “He was admitted on July 1, two days after being diagnosed with COVID-19.”

A statement on Cain’s website revealed that his breathing had been monitored while hospitalized. Cain was considered a high-risk COVID-19 patient due to his past battle with cancer. In 2006, he was given a 30 percent chance of survival from stage 4 colon cancer, CNN reports. After chemotherapy and surgery, he was declared cancer-free in 2007.

“We knew when he was first hospitalized with COVID-19 that this was going to be a rough fight,” a statement on his website read. “He had trouble breathing and was taken to the hospital by ambulance. We all prayed that the initial meds they gave him would get his breathing back to normal, but it became clear pretty quickly that he was in for a battle.”

A co-chair of Black Voices for Trump, Cain attended Donald Trump’s presidential campaign rally in Tulsa, Oklahoma on June 20. According to CNN, at least eight of Trump’s staffers were later diagnosed with Coronavirus.

“We honestly have no idea where he contracted [COVID-19],” Dan Calabrese wrote on Cain’s website earlier this month. “I realize people will speculate about the Tulsa rally, but Herman did a lot of traveling the past week, including to Arizona where cases are spiking.”

Cain is survived by his wife Gloria, their two children Melanie and Vincent and their grandchildren.
