On Thursday (June 4), friends and family of the late George Floyd gathered at North Central University’s Frank J. Lindquist Sanctuary in Minneapolis to celebrate his life during his first memorial service. Reverend Al Sharpton was in attendance and has delivered a national eulogy and Ben Crump, the family’s attorney, has given a national criminal justice address.

The next memorial service for Floyd will take place on Saturday, Jun. 6 in Raeford, North Carolina at the Cape Fear Conference B Headquarters. A public viewing will be held from 11 am to 1 pm ET and the memorial service will begin at 3 pm ET.

The third memorial service will be held on Jun. 8. A public visitation will take place at The Fountain of Praise on Hillcroft Avenue from 12 pm to 6 pm central time. On Jun. 9, the family will hold a private funeral service at the same location at 11 am central time.

On May 25, Floyd was killed at the hands of four Minneapolis police officers. Video footage showed former officer Derek Chauvin with his knee planted onto Floyd’s neck as he called out multiple times that he could not breathe. He kept his knee on his neck for nearly nine minutes. Floyd became unconscious and later died at the hospital. All four officers have been fired.

Yesterday (June 3), the charges for the four men were upgraded. Chauvin is now charged with second-degree murder. The three other cops who were present during the killing — Tou Thao, J. Alexander Kueng and Thomas Lane — are now charged with aiding and abetting murder.

Earlier this week, it was reported that Floyd Mayweather would be covering all of the expenses for the memorials, which has reportedly totaled more than $88,000.
