Swizz Beatz and Timbaland’s Verzuz battles have caused a lot of discussion between fans about hypothetical matchups. Monica versus Brandy has become one of the most popular proposed Instagram Live battles that fans are dying to see.

Both artists have finally broken their silence about whether or not they would ever face-off virtually. In an interview with V103, Monica said that she wouldn’t participate in a Verzuz challenge unless it was a “celebration,” much like the battle between Teddy Riley and Babyface.

“I understand the idea of [Verzuz] and I think it’s really, really entertaining and it is an incredible idea,” the Miss Thang singer said. “Now what I do like is it’s kind of turning into a celebration. I can handle a celebration. One thing that has happened to me my whole career is being put against someone else that I’m not even remotely similar to. I think the reality is, us being polar opposites makes it dope.”

She then went on to say that people have been putting her against Brandy for years.

“The only battle or Verzuz they want to see with me is me against Brandy, and the reality is, people have put us against each other for twenty-something years,” she said. “That would be the only thing that makes sense to me because I’ve been trying to tell people for about 25 years, you can like both! You’re going to turn this into 1998 all over again and I have no interest in that.”

“After a while, I was a little scared watching Sean [Garrett] and The-Dream,” she continued. “Like, hey fellas, are we serious here? It just got a little bit intense and those are two producers that I absolutely adore. So for me, it would have to be a celebratory form of it. It would just have to be. I just don’t see it any other way.”

Brandy, on the other hand, recently spoke to ESSENCE and said that she is “open” to a potential matchup against the “So Gone” singer, but really hasn’t given much thought into it.

The first female Verzuz battle between Erykah Badu and Jill Scott is set to go down on May 9 at 7 pm ET. Check out Brandy and Monica’s interviews below.
