Trey Songz recently revealed that he missed out on an opportunity to sign Summer Walker before she became famous.

During a virtual interview with “The Quicksilva Show,” the “Neighbors Know My Name” singer said that he had an unreleased copy of “Girls Need Love” on a music app on his phone, but he wasn’t able to figure out who was the voice behind the hit.

“Funny story ‘bout Summer Walker actually a lot of people don’t know, actually nobody knows,” he said. “I got this app in my phone that I store music in, unreleased music, and everything from like people sending me songs that they’d like me to listen to or like me to cut or feature on or etc.”

Songz then said he asked different producers if they knew who sang the track, but no one knew who it was.

“So, I had this song that I would listen to and I forgot who sent it to me,” he continued. “So it’s like two years, I would listen to this girl singing this song, the ‘Girls Need Love’ song ... I text every producer that I know personally like, ‘Do you know who is singing this song? I love this girl. I wanna sign this girl.’ And then like two years later after all that, Summer Walker comes out with ‘Girls Need Love.’”

Walker, of course, blew up to be one of the hottest new voices in R&B. Her debut album Over It went on to break Beyonce’s Lemonade streaming record and peaked on the Billboard 200 chart at the No. 2 spot. Over It also became the second-most streamed album by any R&B artist ever, following behind The Weeknd’s Starboy.

Things came back full circle for Songz as he was able to tap Walker for his latest single, “Back Home.”
