Colin Kaepernick took to social media to announce the launching of the Know Your Rights Camp COVID-19 Relief Fund to aid those in communities that are being hit the hardest during the pandemic.

“Black and brown communities are being disproportionately devastated by COVID-19 because of hundreds of years of structural racism,” he said. “That’s why we’ve established the Know Your Rights Camp COVID-19 Relief Fund to help address these issues. Go to to help.”

According to the Know Your Rights Camp website, the funds will provide food, shelter, education and personal protective equipment to minority communities and their essential workers.

The fund will also support those who are incarcerated. “Many of those incarcerated are being held for minor charges or pretrial detention,” the website states. “They should not face a possible death sentence at the hands of COVID-19. We will work with partner organizations to pay bail, reduce prison populations, help stop the spread of Coronavirus and save lives.”

The website also displays data showing how the virus is disproportionately affecting these communities. In New York City, black people represent 22% of the population and 28% of its deaths, whereas brown people represent 29% of the population and 34% of its deaths.

Chicago is 30% black, but black people make up 70% of all Coronavirus cases in the city. Black people also account for half of the state’s COVID-19 deaths.

In Louisiana, more than 70% of people killed by it were black, although black people only make up 32% of the population. The majority of those deaths occurred in New Orleans.

In Michigan, black people make up 33% of COVID-19 cases and 41% of deaths. In St. Louis, specifically, black people represent 100% of the deaths, thus far.

Kaepernick has already donated $100,000 of his own money to the relief fund. Check out his video below.
