After releasing his Music To Be Murdered By album last month, Eminem has continued his promotion rollout with a new social media challenge. The viral #GodzillaChallenge dares fans to attempt rapping along to Eminem’s rapid-fire verse in his Juice WRLD-assisted song “Godzilla.”
According to Genius, Em speeds through 224 words, containing 330 syllables, during his 31-second verse in the song. The breakdown finds him rapping 7.46 words and 10.93 syllables per second, which beats out 2013’s “Rap God,” where he delivered 6.07 words and 9.6 syllables per second.
The Detroit rap veteran announced the competition in a tweet on Tuesday (Feb. 25) and promised prizes to those who impressed him with their skills. Participants were directed to share videos of themselves rapping over Em’s “Godzilla” verse, while including the #GodzillaChallenge hashtag.
“Fill ‘em with the venom and eliminate ‘em’ [Triller] #GodzillaChallenge is on,” Em tweeted. “Who can spit it? Reposting + got prizes for my favorites.”
Fans immediately began sharing their videos across social media — ranging from the surprisingly impressive to the hilariously awful.
Em released his surprise Music To Be Murdered By album back in January. Spanning across 20 tracks, the record featured collaborations with Young M.A, Royce Da 5’9”, White Gold, Ed Sheeran, Skylar Grey, Black Thought, Q-Tip, Denaun, Anderson .Paak, Don Toliver, KXNG Crooked and Joell Ortiz.
Earlier this month, Eminem’s longtime manager Paul Rosenberg revealed that “Godzilla” would receive an accompanying visual. He announced the forthcoming video while celebrating Em’s 2013 “Rap God” video hitting one billion views.
“A BILLY,” Rosenberg wrote on Instagram. “I remember when we made this video and Em kept saying he literally wanted a laptop in his back pocket and he wanted to levitate in a cipher (smh, we made it happen)… wait until you see what he does in ‘Godzilla’! Congrats [Eminem]!”
It’s unclear if the “Godzilla” video will pay tribute to Juice WRLD, whose vocals are posthumously featured.
