Kelly Rowland is expecting her second child, she revealed in a new Women’s Health magazine feature. The former Destiny’s Child songstress also shares a 5-year-old son, Titan, with her husband Tim Weatherspoon. Speaking with the outlet, Rowland said that she and her husband had been “loosely” talking about having another child, but then “COVID happened.”

“We were just like, ‘Let’s see what happens,’” she said. Being pregnant during the pandemic, the singer explained, has presented new challenges, and she was even hesitant to share the news with Women’s Health.

“But you still want to remind people that life is important,” she said. “And being able to have a child… I’m knocking at 40’s door in February. Taking care of myself means a lot to me.”

Rowland also spoke about the pressure of bringing another child into the world — and raising her son — amidst nationwide calls for racial equality. One night, she remembered feeling completely overwhelmed by the repeated grief of the police killings of Breonna Taylor and George Floyd.

“I’d just put Titan to bed,” she reflected. “I got into the shower and I had this real hard, ugly, deep cry. Because I promised to protect my kid. That was the main thing I was thinking about: protecting this little innocence.”

Rowland said she’s been mindful about shielding Titan from traumatic imagery on the news and limiting her own exposure to social media. On Instagram, the “Motivation” singer has used her large platform to encourage voter registration for the upcoming presidential election.

“You really wanna protect your gates,” she added.

On the music front, Rowland revealed she’s working on her next full-length album, which will follow her latest single and gorgeous music video, “Coffee.” She said that her album will also reflect her 2018 reunion with her biological father, whom she hadn’t seen in 30 years.

“I’m learning so much about myself and the things that I missed,” she explained. “You say, ‘I’m fine; I’m fine.’ And yeah, I’m fine—but there are things I would have liked to have experienced from a father.”

“That’s where the music piece comes in,” she continued. “I like to touch on everything. I want it to feel very organic — coming from me.”
