Sometimes you really have to laugh to keep from crying.

Yesterday (Jan. 2), it was reported that a United States drone strike killed General Qassem Soleimani, one of Iran’s top officials. President Donald Trump called for the strike, which also took out Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, a militia leader.

According to Ahmed al-Assadi, a spokesperson for Iraq’s Popular Mobilisation Forces, a militia supported by Iran, confirmed the deaths, naming the United States and Israel as responsible.

“The American and Israeli enemy is responsible for killing the mujahideen Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis and Qassem Soleimani,” al-Assadi said.

President Trump took to Twitter to address the killing of Soleimani, saying that it was long overdue.

He tweeted, “General Qassem Soleimani has killed or badly wounded thousands of Americans over an extended period of time, and was plotting to kill many more…but got caught! He was directly and indirectly responsible for the death of millions of people, including the recent large number of PROTESTERS killed in Iran itself. While Iran will never be able to properly admit it, Soleimani was both hated and feared within the country. They are not nearly as saddened as the leaders will let the outside world believe. He should have been taken out many years ago!”

In an interview on CNN Friday morning, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said the attack headed off an “imminent threat to American lives.” He gave no details, but Pompeo said “the world is a much safer place” with Soleimani gone.

“I can assure you that Americans in the region are much safer,” Pompeo said.

The State Department issued a warning urging Americans to “depart Iraq immediately.”
