During President Donald Trump’s impeachment trial, Democratic Representative Hakeem Jeffries quoted lyrics from Biggie’s 1994 hit “Juicy.” President Trump’s attorney Jay Sekulow asked Rep. Jeffries and everyone else in the building what they were doing there.
Rep. Jeffries responded, “We are here, sir, because President Trump abused his power and then he tried to cover it up. And we are here, sir, to follow the facts, follow the law, be guided by the Constitution, and present the truth to the American people. That is why we are here, Mr. Sekulow. And if you don’t know, now you know.”
Rep. Jeffries tweeted a video of his response out with the caption, “The President’s top lawyer asked an important question on the first day of trial. Why are we here? Donald Trump brazenly abused his power and corruptly tried to cover it up. IF YOU DON’T KNOW, NOW YOU KNOW.”
This isn't the first time Rep. Jeffries has mentioned Biggie in Congress.
According to Business Insider, he also paid homage to the late rapper on the 20th anniversary of his death in 2017. He referred to Biggie’s “rags-to-riches” life story as a “the classic embodiment of the American dream.”
“Biggie Smalls, Frank White, the king of New York. He died 20 years ago today in a tragedy that occurred in Los Angeles. But his words live on forever. I’ve got the privilege of representing the district where Biggie Smalls was raised,” he said.
He continued, “We know he went from negative to positive and emerged as one of the world most important hip hop stars. His rags-to-riches life story is the classic embodiment of the American dream. Biggie Smalls is gone but he will never be forgotten. Rest in piece Notorious B.I.G. Where Brooklyn at?”
