Announced early Monday morning (Jan. 13), this year’s Oscar nominations surprised many. Issa Rae and John Cho unveiled the list of names for the award ceremony, which failed to include any female directors, Jennifer Lopez, Lupita Nyong’o, Jamie Foxx and more.

Joker leads the list scoring 11 nominations, followed by The Irishman, 1917 and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, with each tied for 10 noms. Parasite, Marriage Story, Little Women, Jojo Rabbit, Ford V Ferrari, Joker, The Irishman, 1917 and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood were all nominated for Best Picture.

The Academy reported that a record-breaking 62 women were nominated for awards this year. However, no female directors were acknowledged. This came as a surprise to Little Women fans, with director Greta Gerwig not making the cut. Harriet’s Cynthia Erivo earned her first Oscar nomination for Actress in a Leading Role, which could aid her in becoming the youngest EGOT winner.

Erivo was also nominated in the Animated Short Film category for her and Matthew Cherry’s Hair Love.

By studio, Netflix leads the race with 24 nominations this year, followed by Sony Pictures’ 20 and Disney with 16. Warner Bros and Fox Searchlight tied with 12 each.

Scarlett Johansson landed a double nomination for Lead Actress and Supporting Actress in Marriage Story and Jojo Rabbit. Little Women’s Saoirse Ronan, Bombshell’s Charlize Theron and Judy’s Renée Zellweger were also nominated for Actress in a Leading Role. Nominations for Actor in a Leading Role include Antonio Banderas, Leonardo DiCaprio, Adam Driver, Joker’s Joaquin Phoenix and Jonathan Pryce.

This year’s Oscar snubs ranged far and wide. Despite receiving a Spotlight Award and Screen Actor Guild nomination for his role in Just Mercy, Jamie Foxx and the film as a whole were left out completely by the Academy. Lupita Nyong’o was yet another shocking admission, as Us received zero nominations.

Eddie Murphy’s Dolemite Is My Name and Beyonce’s The Lion King contribution were also left out of the final list. Awkwafina from The Farewell, Clemency’s Alfre Woodard and J.Lo for Hustlers were also unjustly shut out.

As expected, fans had many opinions about those were included in, and left out of, the nominations.

“Appreciation post for Lupita’s performance in Us bc it was one of the best performances of last year and yet it got completely ignored by the academy and that is absolutely unacceptable,” one Twitter user wrote.

“No Lupita. No Taron Egerton. No Adam Sandler. No Awkwafina. No Jennifer Lopez. Nothing for The Farewell. One nomination for Knives Out,” another tweet read. “I’m bout to knock all this sh*t over.”

The 92nd Academy Awards will be broadcast hostless on ABC from the Dolby Theatre at Hollywood & Highland on February 9.
