Lil Wayne has paid tribute to the late 5th Ward Weebie. The New Orleans bounce music icon passed away on Thursday (Jan. 9) from complications following surgery for a ruptured artery, according to nola.com. Weezy shared a tribute on Instagram, which consisted of a photo of Weebie and a caption that said, “Still haven’t been able to find to words to express how I feel.. RIP to a true New Orleans legend.”

According to CNN, Weebie’s publicist said that the rapper, who was born Jerome Cosey, suffered a “heart attack which turned into emergency heart surgery and ultimately heart failure.” He died after being hospitalized. Weebie was 42.

The news of Weebie’s passing broke on Thursday (Jan. 9) and has affected the entire city of New Orleans. “It broke my heart to learn that Jerome Cosey — our 5th Ward Weebie — has passed,” Mayor LaToya Cantrell said in a statement via Twitter. “Let me find out you didn’t know who he was. He was an iconic personality, a New Orleans legend, and a beloved friend. He was the Bounce King, who showed us how to move, how to love, and how to bring passion and humanity to everything we do. New Orleans has lost a cornerstone of our culture. Our city will not be the same without his voice and his spirit. May he rest in God’s perfect peace.”

The bounce music legend released his debut album Show the World in 1999. In 2005, he released “F—K Katrina,” in wake of the catastrophic hurricane that displaced thousands and took over 1,200 lives.

Weebie worked with Drake on “Nice for What,” and also appeared on Lil Wayne’s “Bend It Ova.” Drake performed at Smoothie King Center in September 2018 and was joined by the New Orleans native as his special guest. Weebie performed at Wayne’s Lil WeezyAna Fest in 2015 as well.
