The first trailer for the upcoming Aretha Franklin biopic, Respect, is here. In the clip, Jennifer Hudson, who was picked to star as Franklin by the Queen of Soul herself, belts out an almost entirely a cappella version of her iconic song, “Respect.”

“Following the rise of Aretha Franklin’s career from a child singing in her father’s church’s choir to her international superstardom, RESPECT is the remarkable true story of the music icon’s journey to find her voice,” the biopic’s summary reads.

Hudson will join Forest Whitaker, Marlon Wayans, Audra McDonald, Marc Maron, Tituss Burgess, Saycon Sengbloh, Hailey Kilgore, Skye Dakota Turner, Tate Donovan and Mary J. Blige in the cast, with director Liesl Tommy. The film is expected to his theaters on Aug. 14, 2020.

“I am thrilled with the incredibly talented cast we have assembled for our film, and I’m so proud that Ms. Franklin entrusted us to tell her story and to share it with the world,” Tommy previously told Deadline. “As a storyteller, hers is the kind of story we all dream of telling. Her music has inspired me since I was a little girl, and the milestones of her life and career have shown us all how to strive and thrive. To have this powerhouse group of actors – and the phenomenal talent of Jennifer Hudson in this iconic role – means we have the chance of making this film as transcendent as her glorious life and legacy.”

Along with the trailer, the official Respect Instagram handle posted a first look photo from the film, showing Hudson dressed in a shimmering gold gown, as “Respect” lights up behind her in giant gold lettering. “Find out what it means” is the movie’s tagline.

The feature film marks the latest role for Academy Award winner Hudson, who also covers “Memory” in her Cats role as Grizabella. Her rendition of the song was made available to stream earlier this week.

Along with the upcoming Respect biopic, National Geographic is also set to feature Franklin in the third season of its series, “Genius.” Expected to premiere next spring, Cynthia Erivo will play the Queen of Soul.
