Lawmakers looking to ban “virginity checks” following T.I.’s hymen-gate

“It’s misogynistic, it’s appalling.”

T.I.’s hymen-gate has exploded all over social media. The Atlanta rapper has since made an appearance on Facebook’s “Red Table Talk” and “The View” to discuss the comments he made about his daughter’s virginity.

According to Page Six, two female lawmakers from New York are stepping in to put a ban on virginity check-ups. The outlet reports that state Sen. Roxanne Persaud (D-Brooklyn) and Assemblywoman Michaelle Solages (D-Nassau) were so appalled by Tip’s statements that they are trying to make it a felony.

Sen. Persaud and Assemblywoman Solages have introduced a new legislation that would ban doctors from performing “virginity examinations,” describing them as abusive. “These examinations are not only a violation of women’s and girls’ human rights, but in cases of rape, can cause additional pain and mimic the original act of sexual violence, leading to re-experience, re-traumatization and re-victimization,” the lawmakers said in the bill memo.

Licensed medical professionals conducting or supervising the “virginity check” would endure professional misconduct penalties. Additionally, if the “virginity check” is conducted in a “non-medical” setting, the individual could be charged with sexual abuse in the first degree, which is a class D felony.

“It’s misogynistic, it’s appalling,” Solages told The New York Post. “I was horrified to see this was happening. If a celebrity can impose his power to ensure his 18-year-old daughter gets checked, imagine what can be done in households across New York state?”

As previously reported, Tip said during an episode on the “Ladies Like Us” podcast, “[The doctor is] like, ‘You know, sir, I have to, in order to share information’ — I’m like, ‘Deyjah, they want you to sign this so we can share information. Is there anything you would not want me to know? See, Doc? Ain’t no problem.’”

The podcast episode has since been deleted and the hosts issued an apology as well.
