Many fans will agree that one of the many joys of following along on BROCKHAMPTON’s journey is trying to decode the group’s abstract and cryptic visuals. Their latest offering is “The Top Of The Mountain,” which closely follows the release of their latest album ROADRUNNER: NEW LIGHT, NEW MACHINE. The new video starts off with a series of photos of mountains flashing across the screen one by one (reminiscent of a PowerPoint, according to a YouTube comment), as the opening hook plays:

Go ‘head and throw a chain on, n***a. Tell them boys where you came from, n***a/ Tell them boys why I stay up late, tryna say, tryna say, tryna say some, n***a/

The aforementioned ROADRUNNER: NEW LIGHT, NEW MACHINE includes features from Danny Brown, JPEGMAFIA, A$AP Rocky, A$AP Ferg, SoGone SoFlexy, Charlie Wilson, and Baird. It was preceded by their single “Buzzcut” featuring Danny Brown. BROCKHAMPTON’s last body of work before that 2019’s GINGER, which boasts their super successful Platinum-certified single “SUGAR.” Prior to that was 2018’s iridescence and then their SATURATION trilogy that started back in 2017.

In one of the most recent interviews available from Kevin Abstract, he details what is different about the latest project that sets if apart from the rest:

“I think [this album] feels heavier than the other ones. Maybe because we’re more explicit and it’s not just ‘Brockhampton are sad and we don’t know why. At first I was like: ‘I don’t know how gay I want my lyrics to be on this album.’ I wanted to show different sides to me. But there’s a lack of representation in general, so I definitely feel like I have to be open with this shit when I’m rapping on songs.”
