30 years after they dropped their self-titled debut, Cypress Hill continue to push the boundaries of music overall. This week, the legendary L.A. collective reveal a single titled “Champion Sound,” a collaboration with Detroit multi-talent Black Milk that made landfall alongside the new video game RBI Baseball 21. The track sees B-Real and Sen Dog reminding listeners of their overarching influence and countless successes:

“Show me the stage, we came to work, ’bout to hit ‘em where it hurts, champions coming first’, cause we don’t know no second place, I’m the one that set the pace, roll one and elevate, celebrate/

We’ve been winning so long, maintain so strong, while others couldn’t hold on, but this that all mighty Cypress Hill shit, stop a hater real quick, evacuate the building, evacuate the children, we bringing down the ceiling/”

Widely known as true pioneers of west coast hip hop, Cypress Hill have sold upwards of 20 million records worldwide, earning a wealth of Gold and Platinum plaques along the way. Their most successful album to date was the sophomore release Black Sunday, which contained classic singles like “I Ain’t Goin’ Out Like That,” ”When the Shit Goes Down,” and “Insane in the Brain” — that project landed the group their first number one on the Billboard 200 thanks to 261,000 units sold during its first week out, going on to sell around 3.4 million in the United States alone.

Their last full-length, Elephants on Acid, was released back in 2018, eight years after its predecessor Rise Up. Despite the gap, Cypress Hill only improved in overall sound, delivering 21 genre-bending cuts with additional contributions from Brevi, Sick Jacken, Sadat, and Alaa Fifty. Hopefully, a tenth body of work lies somewhere on the horizon.
