Over the weekend, the anticipated NYC-based coming-of-age film Boogie made its debut. The official soundtrack features a stacked roster of various artists, boasting names like Polo G, Sheff G, Bella Su, Bad Boy Raco, Jacquees, and several cuts by Pop Smoke. On the project’s opening track, listeners are met right out the gate with those unmistakable Pop vocals:

Talk to me nice (Talk to me nice), or don’t talk at all, ah/ I make a call and it’s war (I make a call) I’m off that Adderall. Get to sprayin’ n***as ‘cause I hate niggas (Nah) Fuck n***as, I ain’t playing with them, I don’t really wanna hear niggas (Nah). I don’t got nothing to say, nigga (Grrt) I’m with bae eatin’ steak dinner (Woo)/ Just know he got a K with him, and my little mama got it in her purse/ All I gotta say is, “Bae get ‘em”If I run down, it’s a drum round

From acclaimed writer, producer and restaurateur Eddie Huang comes his directorial debut Boogie, the story of Alfred “Boogie” Chin. The film is centered around a basketball phenom living in Queens, New York, who dreams of one day playing in the NBA. While his parents pressure him to focus on earning a scholarship to an elite college, Boogie must find a way to navigate a new girlfriend, high school, on-court rivals and the burden of expectation. The cast features Taylor Takahashi, Taylour Paige, Pamelyn Chee, Mike Moh, Jorge Lendeborg Jr., Alexa Mareka, Perry Yung, and the late Pop Smoke.

“He gave me a thousand percent. They were tough 16-hour days, overnights, and he shot five overnights in a row,” Huang said during an interview with The Times as he recalled his experience working with Pop. “Kids were coming on the bridge to watch us shoot the scenes. We would play Pop’s record. All our actors, the extras, the kids on the bridge watching us shoot scenes, everyone was doing the Woo dance. It was pretty special.”
