Ashanti is making headlines everywhere today once again as music lovers everywhere share recaps of last night’s Verzuz battle with Keyshia Cole. Ashanti made sure to capitalize on this moment, as she swiftly delivered her brand new single “235 (2:35 I Want You)” as soon as the face-off closed out. On the sultry new track, Ashanti sings about those certain hours of the night when desires become more potent:

It’s 2:35 in the morning and I’m thinking ‘bout you. All the things that we should and maybe shouldn’t do./ I don’t know if I’m wrong for saying this, but I want you. Don’t wanna make a move too soon. Don’t wanna ruin where this could go./ I wanna think about it, wanna think about it. Wanna see what this could be. Wanna take it there but I’m kinda scared. ’Cause I don’t know if we’re ready./ So when I think about it. Don’t wanna waste no more time, wanna be about it, hey.

The official track debut was not the first time people heard the track. If you were tuned into last night’s event, you’re well aware the battle started nearly an hour and a half late, and Ashanti had to hold it down solo as she waited for her opponent to arrive. To keep the viewers engaged, Ashanti told her DJ to play her new song, which wound up being “235.” For fans who weren’t present at the beginning of the battle, she replayed a snippet at the very end as well. It’s been a while since we’ve gotten a full-length solo project from the R&B legend, but hopefully the new single is signaling a brand new project in the very near future.
