As the protests and marches continue throughout the globe in response to the Black Lives Matter movement, hip hop continues to add to the accompanying soundtrack. As the latest, Bay Area star IAMSU! drops off a melodic single titled “For The People,” which sees him rapping about his own struggle to success and eventual retirement:

“Home of the brave, land of the free, love on our entertainment could care less about me/

Dangling from a string on the tip of the highest peak, rapping what got his speech on the top of the hottest beats.../

Careful choice of my words, gotta refrain, gotta protect myself when I’m finally outta the game/

They gon’ suck every dollar outta your name, mentality silent care nada about the fame...”

While “For The People” isn’t as directed towards the racism and police brutality the artwork would make it seem, there’s no question about IAMSU!’s activity in his community. Over the weekend, he participated in a hike alongside The Black Neighborhood, an Oakland-based organization that focuses on youth empowerment and the distribution of groceries to those at need. He’s also been seen promoting the creative entity Brave Area, which donated all of their proceeds from a recent merch drop back to those who need it most. All-in-all, IAMSU! is one of many in the Bay Area who are speaking out about the recent passings of George Floyd and others — yesterday (June 8) saw thousands marching in protest from San Francisco’s Marina District to the North Beach Police Station in solidarity. One can certainly expect the protests to continue in the days ahead.

You can press play on “For The People” below. Also added for those who missed it are recent drops from IAMSU! for “Boujie,” “Sudi Man,” and the Chris O’Bannon-assisted “High Enough.” Hopefully, there’s a new project from the HBK alum on the horizon.
