The NOLA rapper is back with more positive vibes.

Good things come to the faithful and such is the case for New Orleans rapper Dee-1. His latest effort, Timeless, dropped today (May 1). The album is the second release on his Mission Vission Music and the follow up to 2019’s God and Girls, which was his first since leaving RCA. Timeless is his third studio album overall since his 2017 Slingshot David: The Album debut.

The “Jay, 50 & Weezy” rapper has never shied away from expressing his spirituality — in life or on wax. His background in education is a major part of his style and his content has always been instructive. He helped educate students about student loan debt with Sallie Mae for heaven’s sake.

Seeking his fans’ input, he took to social media to ask his followers to help him pick the album’s release date. “Good idea. Drop a new album. #Timeless. Give me a date when to drop it between now and May 8th... i’ll pick one,” he said. True to his word, he landed on May 1.

Always one to be on top of current events, he dropped a single called “Corona Clap” earlier this month. Set to the tune of “Nolia Clap,” it’s the best use of this beat since Yasiin Bey aka Mos Def flipped it for “Katrina Clap.” In addition to this loosie, fans of his music will surely rejoice over the fact that they have a whole new album’s worth of music from the conscious rapper to listen to while inside.

Timeless comes about in a time when religion and rap go hand in hand. Mainstream artists like Kanye West, Chance The Rapper, and Kendrick Lamar have made their Christian faith plain, and it has helped blur the line between rap and Christian rap.

Dee-1 has embraced his religious identity consistently and backed it up with considerable talent. While he might not be as high-profile of an artist, his message is clear be found in the text of one of his recent tweets that reads, “Would you rather make #Timeless music and be semi-famous or be a one-hit wonder with lots of fame?”

I think we know how he would answer this question. Check out Timeless below.
