Ab-Soul celebrates Top Dawg’s birthday with “Dangerookipawaa Freestyle”

The release marks a big return for the Black Hippy emcee.

While the rest of Black Hippy has been keeping a relatively high output with their releases, Ab-Soul has remained largely out of the music picture since the release of his fourth studio album Do What Thou Wilt back in 2016. Aside from a few features stretched throughout that time frame, the first big moment back on the scene was a spotlight-stealing assist on Reason’s “Trapped In,” which also featured fellow Cali star Boogie. Now, one of hip hop’s most well-known stoners celebrates 4/20 with “Dangerookipawaa Freestyle,” which also acts as a birthday tribute to Top Dawg Entertainment’s namesake, Anthony “Top Dawg” Tiffith. To the delight of his fans, Ab-Soul is just as on top of his game lyrically, delivering rewind-worthy bars over Devin Williams’ soulful production:

“Nat Turner with the curly hair, pullin’ strings like John Mayer/

Probably make a b***h wish come true out the blue, rub the oil lamp and I’m there, yeah/

Monkey see, monkey do, my n***a, ask Abu, I’m on a magic carpet stompin’ down Central Avenue/

Del Amo Boulevard was all I knew, I sold my dream to Punch and Dude, they turned me to the f***in’ truth/”

He also shouts out Eminem, Craig Mack, and the late Mac Miller — using his real name, Malcolm McCormick — on the nearly four-minute offering.

Last November, Ab-Soul announced that a new album was coming in 2020 during his Day N Vegas set. Given that he seems to have been awakened, one can only hope that his long-awaited fifth studio offering will soon come to fruition. For now, fans can hear still-fresh verses from Soul Brother #2 on tracks from Jhené Aiko, FifthGod, his aforementioned TDE labelmate, and more.

Press play on the incredible “Dangerookipawaa Freestyle” below. Expect TDE to have more heat in store soon.
