DeJ Loaf is back.
Not counting last year’s collaboration with Tink, the Detroit star hasn’t delivered much for her fans since 2018’s “Liberated” with Leon Bridges. Last week, that changed with the release of “Bubbly,” which is produced by Derrick $horter and sees DeJ engaging in a proper birthday celebration. As revealed via her most recent Instagram post, the track is said to be the first from the forthcoming project Sell Sole II, a follow-up to its 2014 predecessor:
“I haven’t felt this good physically and mentally in a long time! I can honestly say, this song and visual is a true reflection of DEJ “the artist” and, more importantly, “the PERSON! Throughout all of my trials and tribulations, getting back to my fans has been my guiding light … Without yall I wouldn’t be able to do what I love! I’m forever grateful for this opportunity/position. Thank you from the bottom of my heart!”
The single is also accompanied by a dreamlike visual courtesy of Psycho Films. The creative clip begins with DeJ Loaf in a room full of champagne bottles, which is interspersed with bubble-filled scenes of people in different rooms, from a stripper in action to an older woman repeating the song’s lyrics.
The overall vibe of “Bubbly” is a continuation of what made DeJ Loaf a success – a mixtape of warm melodies mixed with uncompromising raps about everyday street life. It’s the very formula that DeJ utilized on her breakout hit “Try Me,” which peaked at #45 on the Billboard 100 back in 2014. She’s since landed on the charts via subsequent singles “Back Up” (featuring Big Sean) and “No Fear,” as well as through her featured appearances on Kid Ink’s “Be Real” and Jacquees’ “At The Club.”
