It’s been about a year since Rotimi released his third official EP The Beauty of Becoming, which saw seven tracks and a couple of features from Wale and Afro B — 2019 also saw a second EP prior titled Walk With Me. This week, the multi-talent made a big return with a new single titled “Love Somebody,” a Tha Bizness-produced but that was released on his 31st birthday. The song sees him professing his love for someone who doesn’t yet see what awaits her:

“My beautiful lover, your happiness is right in your face, like the sun over water, I guarantee that we will shine every day … So why do we make things difficult? Running away from beautiful, you never know how things unfold, could be good for your soul…/”

Directed by June Bae, an accompanying visual brings the Afrobeats-styled cut to life. Co-starring his girlfriend Vanessa Mdee, Rotimi tells the story of Adam and Eve as he roams through Eden. Following apparent pain in his ribs, Mdee surfaces and the two seemingly enjoy paradise together — until they are captured and taken to “A.D.,” presumably signaling the end of newness and the beginning of their journey in the real world.

Via Complex (who premiered the single), Rotimi further explained the meaning of “Love Somebody”:

“I wanted to convey the epitome of what love is and where it started … From the root, with the Adam and Eve story using the love of my life for such a beautiful song. The world could use a little love.”

Outside of music, Rotimi has also made a name for himself as a popular actor, mainly through his starring role in the Starz staple “Power,” working alongside executive producer 50 Cent as well as leads Omari Hardwick, Joseph Sikora, Lela Loren, and Naturi Naughton. Rotimi will also be appearing in the 2021 releases Singlehollic, True to The Game 2: Gena’s Story, and Coming 2 America.
