In light of the tragic apartment fire that took the lives of 17 people in the Bronx over the weekend, Fat Joe has teamed up with the New York City Mayor’s Fund to launch a relief fund to raise money for victims and their families.

On Tuesday (Jan. 11), the “All The Way Up” emcee took to Twitter to share details about the fund. “My heart is saddened by the tragedy in my beloved Bronx,” he tweeted. “Please join me in supporting this community by donating to the Bronx Relief Fund at fatjoe.me/donatebronx.”

Aside from Joe’s own personal donation, he has also confirmed financial pledges from DJ Khaled and JAY-Z. Additionally, the Bronx native is in the process of contacting his prominent friends in the entertainment, music, business and sports communities for more aid.

On Sunday (Jan. 9), a fire broke out on the third floor of the duplex Twin Parks Towers North West, killing 17 people — including eight children. At least 44 people were hurt in the deadly flames and authorities say several of them are “clinging to their lives” in nearby hospitals.

So far, investigators are blaming the fire on a malfunctioning space heater. On Tuesday (Jan. 11), the New York City Office of Chief Medical Examiner (OCME) ruled that all 17 victims died from smoke inhalation. “OCME is working with the affected families to confirm the IDs of victims through a careful forensic process and expedite the release of their loved ones for final arrangements,” an OCME spokesperson said. “This is deliberate but steady work, with some IDs confirmed and decedents released to funeral homes already. I expect that names will be shared by PD officially once the work is closer to completion.”

A candlelight vigil is planned for the victims on Tuesday at 6 p.m. at the corner of Folin Street and Tiebout Avenue in Fordham Heights.
