George Floyd’s four-year-old niece was shot at her home in South Houston over the weekend.

According to Click 2 Houston, the shooting took place in the 3300 block of Yellowstone Boulevard about 2:55 a.m. on Saturday, which was New Year’s Day. Two children and four adults were inside the apartment at the time of the incident. Four-year-old Arianna Delane was shot in the torso while she was asleep in her bed.

“My daughter jumped up and said she had been hit,” Derrick Delane, the young girl’s father, said. “I [saw] the blood, the bleeding, and I grabbed her.”

Derrick said his wife drove Delane to the hospital. Her father said she suffered from a punctured lung, liver, and had several broken ribs. She also had to undergo surgery, but is recovering. “She’s healing very fast. The last time I checked on her she was breathing on her own. She was doing really great,” he said.

Floyd was tragically killed by four Minneapolis police officers — Derek Chauvin, Thomas Lane, Tou Thao and J. Alexander Kueng — in May 2020. Chauvin was convicted of second-degree unintentional murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter for placing his knee on the 46-year-old’s neck for more than nine minutes as Lane and Kueng restrained his body to the ground. Floyd cried out, “I can’t breathe” several times, but his pleas were ignored as several spectators watched and recorded nearby.

Floyd’s death reignited the Black Lives Matter movement and people took to the streets to demand an end to police brutality and racism in this country.

So far, police do not have a suspect description or motive in Delane’s shooting. Anyone with information about the incident is encouraged to contact the Houston Police Department Major Assaults & Family Violence Division at 713-308-8800 or Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.
