After dominating the R&B scene with her power ballads and love songs for years, Toni Braxton was willing to retire from music in 2013. This would have been a nightmare for true fans of the genre but thankfully, that is not the case. During a 2013 episode of Braxton Family Values, Braxton told legendary producer Babyface that she had no interest in making music and admitted she had nothing to sing about anymore.

Fortunately, she was able to meet the late, great Prince soon after who ended up convincing Braxton to not quit. “He taught me about preserving my music, my talent and to never compromise my integrity,” she told NBC in 2016. “Prince was one of the artists that called me when I was about to retire and he said, ‘Toni Braxton, you cannot retire. It’s too early and you’re gifted to even think this.’” Today (Oct. 1), the singer’s sixth studio album Libra is now available on all streaming platforms and we are here for it!

With more music seeing the light of day on streaming platforms in recent times, this only makes the future of music look more promising. Fifteen years later, Braxton remains seemingly content with the result of Libra. When asked recently in a Twitter Q&A, fittingly called #AskToni, which of her albums she felt deserved more recognition, Braxton responded with the title of her 2005 album. And she is absolutely right; Libra is one of her most criminally underrated albums and it will now have the proper acknowledgment now that justice has been served!

There are generations of music lovers and R&B enthusiasts that aren’t fully aware just how great Toni Braxton is, but with Libra hitting all streaming platforms, it is easier for fans to school themselves on such an underrated body of work.
