The woman said she was a 21-year-old radio intern when she met the singer.

A woman took the stand during R. Kelly’s racketeering trial and testified that the singer locked her in his studio for several days then raped her.

On Thursday (Sept. 9), the woman, identified as Sonja, said she was a 21-year-old radio station intern when she first met the 12 Play singer. She told the jurors that she wanted to “kick-start” her career by interviewing Kelly. When she traveled to his Chicago-area home, one of the singer’s associates offered her condoms. “He asked me a couple of crazy questions,” she said. When the man asked if she needed “protection,” Sonja said she originally thought he was talking about security. However, she said, “he just came out and said, ‘Do you need a condom?’”

She responded, “No, I’m not here for that.”

Another one of Kelly’s assistants then photocopied her identification card and asked for the phone numbers of her close friends and family members. Sonja said she was taken to a room and told a “list of rules” to follow in the home — including asking for permission to use the bathroom or eat. Once the associate left the room, the woman said she heard him lock the door.

After being left in the locked room for days without water or food, someone eventually brought her Chinese food. After taking a few bites, Sonja said she began to feel “something coming on” and passed out.

Once she woke up, the woman claimed she saw Kelly “doing up his pants in the corner” and she noticed that there was “some wet stuff” in between her legs. Her underwear was lying nearby on a couch and she believed it was removed when she became unconscious.

“It felt like something had been inside of me,” Sonja said. “I believed I was touched sexually.” A prosecutor then asked the 39-year-old woman if she consented to any sexual acts with Kelly and she replied, “absolutely not.”

Sonja was later told that Kelly would not be available to conduct the interview and one of his colleagues threatened her by saying, “You don’t want to mess with Mr. Kelly.”
