Michael K. Williams’ death is now being investigated as a drug overdose and has triggered a criminal investigation.
According to TMZ, authorities are now searching for the person who sold the drugs to the star. “Our law enforcement sources say NYPD detectives are conducting an investigation into the origin of the narcotics cops found at the site of the actor’s death over the weekend … which we’re told are believed to be heroin-based,” the outlet stated.
As REVOLT previously reported, Williams was found dead in his Brooklyn home on Monday (Sept. 6) by his nephew after he missed an appearance over the weekend. Drug paraphernalia was reportedly found in the home.
Williams was most known for his role as Omar Little in “The Wire.” He recently starred in the Emmy Award-nominated show “Lovecraft Country.” He received his fifth Emmy nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actor for his role as Montrose Freeman. He was also Emmy-nominated for his roles in Netflix’s critically acclaimed series “When They See Us,” HBO’s “The Night Of,” and the film Bessie.
Back in 2017, Williams opened up about his struggles with drugs during an interview with The New York Times. Although he received treatment for his addiction, he relapsed multiple times throughout his career. “Addiction doesn’t go away,” he said. “It’s an everyday struggle for me, but I’m fighting.”
Following the news of his passing, the tributes began pouring in on social media. HBO even released a statement saying that it was “devastated” to learn of Williams’ passing, noting that he had been “a member of the HBO family for more than 20 years.”
“While the world is aware of his immense talents as an artist, we knew Michael as a dear friend who was beloved by all who had the privilege to work with him. We send our deepest condolences to his family for this immeasurable loss,” the network added.
