The two collaborated on the 1999 song “You Know What We Bout.”

Silkk the Shocker revealed how JAY-Z’s verse on the 1999 song “You Know What We Bout” almost didn’t happen.

During an appearance on REVOLT’s “Drink Champs” podcast with N.O.R.E. and DJ EFN, Silkk recalled how the 4:44 emcee submitted his verse to his record label just hours before the deadline. “I wanted JAY — nobody really knew JAY at the time … I’m like, ‘Yo, I need this song,’ [but] by the time I got to it, JAY was poppin’ a little more,” explained the “It Ain’t My Fault” rapper.

“Rest in peace to DMX. I think it was supposed to be me, DMX and JAY on a record. … What happened was, my album had to be turned in on a Thursday at 11 a.m., and I think the [Hard Knock Life] tour was over Wednesday night.”

DMX was not featured on the track, however, Silkk said Hov was able to get his verse to the label in time.

“He left the show immediately, went back and knocked it out like 3 a.m., 4 a.m. in the morning, and sent it,” Silkk said. “He coulda just been, you know, ‘I’m tired, I just rocked a show.’ … He came through. I hit JAY I’m like, ‘Yo, how much I owe you?’ JAY like, ‘You ain’t owe nothing. … Nah we good, it’s on the house.’”

Silkk’s third studio album Made Man, the LP on which “You Know What We Bout” was featured, went on to peak at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart, becoming his only project to do so. The 1999 release stayed on the Billboard 200 chart for 20 weeks. Made Man was also the No. 1 R&B and hip hop album, spending 23 weeks on that chart.
