The Roots MC addressed rumors about an alleged Verzuz battle against Fugees.

Fans were excited at the prospect of a Verzuz battle between The Roots and Fugees after a flyer promoting the mashup began circulating on social media earlier this week. However, according to HipHopDX, the two-group battle will not be happening.

On Tuesday (Aug. 24), Black Thought spoke with the outlet and addressed the rumors. According to DX, The Roots MC denied that any such battle was being planned and gave the idea a “thumbs down.”

This isn’t the first time a fictitious Verzuz mashup has picked up steam online. Earlier this month, a fake flyer promising a Chicago showdown between Chief Keef and Lil Durk went viral on Twitter fooling many fans. Likewise, the flyer promoting the fictional Roots and Fugees battle also appeared to be official, using the Verzuz and Triller logos and even claiming to be sponsored by Cîroc.

However, some fans were tipped off to the fact that the Fugees and Roots face-off was unlikely seeing as Fugees haven’t been a group for almost 20 years. The trio, comprised of Lauryn Hill, Wyclef Jean and Pras; disbanded in 1997 and again in 2004.

Prior to that, Fugees released two albums, 1994’s Blunted on Reality and The Score in 1996, which is still one of the best-selling albums of all time. The records gave way to hits like “Nappy Heads,” “Ready Or Not” and “Killing Me Softly.”

The Roots, on the other hand, have released 14 studio albums since forming in Philadelphia in 1987. Most recently, the group performed as the recurring house band on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.”

While The Roots and Fugees’ Verzuz battle isn’t happening, fans can hold out hope for a showdown between Bone Thugs-n-Harmony and Three 6 Mafia. As reported by REVOLT, DJ Paul recently suggested that the long-awaited battle is close to getting on the Verzuz schedule.
