The first photos of Derek Chauvin post his prison sentencing have been released. Over the weekend, TMZ shared the images of the ex-Minneapolis officer, which were taken on June 28, five days after he and the rest of the world learned his punishment for the murder of the late George Floyd.

Chauvin is serving a 22 and a half -year prison sentence on charges of second-degree unintentional murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter. The conviction came after footage of him kneeling on Floyd’s neck for nine minutes and 29 seconds went viral, broadcasting one of the many senseless acts of brutality committed at the hands of police.

Per the judge, the days Chauvin spent behind bars before the sentencing announcement were deducted from his prison sentence. With another month down, the former cop — who had to register as a predatory offender and is forever prohibited from possessing a gun or explosives — has already served roughly 230 days of his 270-month sentence, which may be reduced to 15 years and parole if he maintains good behavior.

Chauvin is also facing federal civil rights charges for his unreasonable use of force against Floyd and his failure to render him medical aid. As REVOLT previously reported, however, he is close to a plea deal that would allow him to explain his reason for killing the late man, escape a life sentence and serve the possible 20-25-year term at the same as his current sentence.

“In federal court, there would be a substantial difference between what he would receive if he went to trial and was convicted versus what he would get if he pled guilty, and as they say, take responsibility for his actions,” said Former Hennepin County Chief Public Defender Mary Moriarty. He added that Chauvin’s guilty verdict in Minneapolis influenced his decision to plead guilty in the federal case.
