Khalid has officially released his first solo release of the year today (July 21). The freshly dropped “New Normal” single signals the beginning of a new era for the Platinum recording artist. The accompanying video expresses Khalid’s interpretation of a new normal, which depicts a futuristic setting of high technology, intriguing landscapes, and a lot of indoor greenery. On the track, Khalid provides his encouraging lyrics that he hopes will help people have faith in the future that is to come:

You found your way but it’s never enough, and though it’s been tough for you, losing touch/ But I, summer hazards end sometimes, although I can’t promise you much/ You’ll be fine, you’ll be fine, so you make you better, somewhere in the darkness

Sippin’ you the heartache, don’t know what predicted how far we came/ It’s not what you wanted/ How fast the time goes? Living in the moment

Khalid walked into this new era with lots of intention, and made sure to express a few words of gratitude when the visual premiered. “This one is really special to me,” he writes. “No matter what life throws your way, it’ll only be just a season. Always remain hopeful. ‘Summer has its end sometimes’ I love u guys! The start of a new era.”

So far in 2021, we’ve seen a few assists from Khalid, including tracks like “working” by Tate McRae, “Otra Noche Sin Ti” by J Balvin, and “Feels” by WATTS. The Texas star also landed a major collab when he assisted Alicia Keys on her self-titled album last year. The last full-length project we got from Khalid is 2019’s Free Spirit. Khalid made his successful debut back in 2017 with American Teen, which boasts his mega-hits “Location” and “Young Dumb & Broke.”
