The Tune Squad has won again. LeBron James and the Looney Tunes not only conquered the server-verse but they’ve also bested every other movie on box office charts this weekend.

In its first week, Space Jam: A New Legacy, racked up $31.6 million in ticket sales, according to Deadline. The amount was enough to unseat Marvel’s Black Widow for the No. 1 movie in the U.S. Black Widow, starring Scarlett Johansson, brought in $26.3 million in its second weekend.

Despite negative reviews on sites like Rotten Tomatoes, the Space Jam sequel exceeded the $20 million projection it was expected to pull in during its first week in theaters. Space Jam 2 was shown in 3,965 theaters in North America and was available to stream via HBO Max at no additional charge to subscribers, according to Variety.

The outlet reports Space Jam: A New Legacy collected $23 million internationally from 64 overseas markets. The amount brings the film’s global total to $54.6 million. Production costs reached $150 million.

Warner Bros. domestic theatrical distribution chief Jeff Goldstein told Deadline, “It’s the family movie of the summer, and it’s exciting to see audiences come back in big numbers.” The  $31.65 million is the highest amount of tickets sold for a family film during the pandemic. It also outdid Godzilla vs. Kong‘s Easter opening of $31.625 million, making it the best debut for a Warner Bros. movie since the coronavirus shutdown cinemas nationwide.

LeBron James has been heavily involved in the promotion of the movie. He’s had Bugs Bunny come on his HBO show “The Shop,” created custom Space Jam Nike sneakers and used his social media accounts to draw more interest. Clearly, James is excited about his film’s success. Via Twitter, the 4x NBA champion sent a special message to critics. “Hi haters!” he wrote above a link to an article announcing the movie’s first-week box office figures.
