It’s been nearly nine months since esteemed rapper MF Doom, born Daniel Dumile, died at the age of 49. As REVOLT previously reported, his hometown is set to honor his legacy by naming a street after him in the North Park section of Long Beach, New York. According to the Long Island Herald, the Long Beach City Council recently approved a measure to rename the 100 block of East Hudson Street KMD-MF DOOM WAY.

The initial effort to dedicate the East Hudson Street, between Riverside Boulevard and Long Beach Road, began with Dr. Patrick Graham. Dr. Graham started a petition for the city to make the change. It garnered close to 10,000 signatures and served as the spark for the measure.

“The hip-hop community often refers to Mr. Dumile as ‘the rapper’s favorite rapper,’” Graham wrote on behalf of the KMD-MF DOOM Way Committee. “His influence on hip hop was not fully realized until after facing tragic moments in his life. However, during this period, he called on his youthful experience in Long Beach to reinvent himself as MF DOOM.”

In addition to Graham’s petition, the city council also faced pressure to make the change from “a group of young gentlemen,” according to City Corporation Counsel Richard Berrios. “ [MF Doom] grew up in Long Beach and was an avid skateboarder and he helped make the sport cross city lines,” Berrios said during the meeting, LI Herald reports. “MF Doom is a shining example of what Long Beach should be about.”

City Council President John Bendo likened Doom to another popular Long Beach native. “What Billy Crystal is to comedy, MF Doom was to hip hop. He was a significant artist who came from Long Beach,” Bendo said. REVOLT will continue to share updates regarding the street renaming ceremony date announcement.
