Beachgoers in Ocean City, MD caught an early fireworks show Sunday (July 4) morning after “an unintentional discharge of fireworks” exploded near the water, CNN reports.

Online reports initially claimed a vehicle filled with fireworks was on fire on the beach. However, first responders who arrived at the scene instead found employees of the fireworks company hired to set up the beach town’s July 4th celebration. Some had suffered minor injuries, but declined to be transported to a hospital. The fire department stated there were no other injuries to visitors in town to celebrate Independence Day.

Frightened spectators shared several videos online displaying the colorful explosion. Some of the clips show people on the boardwalk and beach running away from the chaos, while others watch in awe.

“Prior to the fireworks being off-loaded from the vehicle, Fire Marshals [secured] a safe zone around the fireworks and put other safety protocols in place,” Ocean City Fire Chief Richie Bowers said in a statement. “It is this very zone and safety protocols that kept anyone else from being injured.”

Unfortunately, visitors hoping to catch a fireworks show from the shore will have to go elsewhere. Ocean City officials canceled all fireworks festivities “due to an abundance of caution.” In a statement via its official website, the town wrote, “Ocean City Fire Marshals are continuing safety inspections at both fireworks locations after the unintended discharge of fireworks on the beach this morning. At this time, the cause of the fireworks discharge is unknown.”

“A perimeter around the fireworks site has been established and will remain in place until the safety inspections are complete, which could take several days,” officials added. “At this time, areas of the Boardwalk have also been closed to pedestrian traffic until a thorough safety inspection has been completed.”
