Vince Staples returns with “Law of Averages”

  /  06.18.2021

While not necessarily elusive, Vince Staples has been pretty minimal from a musical standpoint for quite a while now. His last album, the conceptual FM!, was released back in 2018 and contained 11 short cuts with varied contributions from Kamaiyah, E-40, Jay Rock, Kehlani, Earl Sweatshirt, Buddy, and Tyga. Since then, he did birth another concept, “The Vince Staples Show,” an internet series that spawned loose singles like “So What?,” “Sheet Music,” and “Hell Bound (Ad 01)” — ultimately leading many to believe that a new project was somewhere nearby. Unfortunately, there wasn’t — even so, Staples could be heard providing verses for Dreamville’s Revenge of the Dreamers III and Lil Yachty’s Lil Boat 3.5.

Back in April, Desus Nice interview Staples in GQ, and it was then revealed that the Long Beach star would soon be releasing not one, but two, new bodies of work — a self-titled album and Ramona Park Broke My Heart, along with a show for Netflix. Today, the momentum towards these releases begins with “Law of Averages,” a track that was first announced earlier in the week.

Literally a decade ago, Staples first made his big splash on the scene with Shyne Coldchain Vol. 1, which later saw an official sequel in 2014, following the collaborative releases Winter In Prague and Stolen Youth with Michael Uzowuru and the late Mac Miller, respectively. His first official LP, the critically acclaimed Summertime ‘06, made landfall a year later, boasting 20 tracks with additional features from Daley, Jhené Aiko, Joey Fatts, Kilo Kish, Snoh Aalegra, A$ton Matthews, and more. The even more commercially successful Big Fish Theory arrived in 2017, which landed within the top 20 of the Billboard 200.

Press play on the official video for “Law of Averages” below. Hopefully, we’ll get some additional information on Vince Staples and/or Ramona Park Broke My Heart sooner than later.
