Lil Nas X thanked Saturday Night Live on Sunday (May 23) for selecting him to perform on what he’s now calling his “favorite night of his career.”

According to Vogue, the polarizing artist performed his new song “Sun Goes Down” draped in an outfit from London-based Nigerian designer Mowalola Ogunlesi’s spring 2020 “Coming for Blood” collection. The song is Lil Nas X’s latest offering from his forthcoming Montero album, set to be released this summer.

“Sun Goes Down” was the second performance for the controversial artist whose first act of the night didn’t go according to plan. As he gyrated across the stage with his chest completely exposed, the 22-year-old artist from Georgia sang his Billboard Hot 100 number one hit “MONTERO (Call Me By Your Name).”

Unsurprisingly, the fearless Lil Nas X made sure the stage was filled with frolicking shirtless men, a stripper pole and several satan-inspired aesthetics. What happened next defined the night for the young artist who took to Twitter once the show was over to bask in the comments and explain himself.

Midway through a risqué pole routine, Lil Nas X split his pants. The leather trousers, also designed by Ogunlesi, appeared to tear along the crotch area. But like a pro, he continued the show.

“NOT MY PANTS RIPPED ON LIVE ON TV,” Nas X tweeted. “OMFG NO. [I] wanted to do my pole routine so bad this what [I] get lmaoo.

On Sunday, Lil Nas X presumably woke up and noticed his name was a trending topic on social media. He added more insight on what exactly took place during his first performance ever on the comedy sketch television show. “[I] know [I] do a lot of planned shit but ripping my pants on live television is not one of them,” he explained. “At first [I] was afraid to even perform. Then we rehearsed for 2 weeks, then all of the dancers got removed because one had Covid and new ones had to learn the routine in 24 hours, and then [I] ended up ripping my pants and couldn’t finish,” he wrote. “everything happens for a reason tho lol.”
