The attorneys for the family of Andrew Brown Jr. have released a statement in response to a judge’s decision to not publicly release the bodycam footage of his killing.

“We are deeply disappointed by the judge’s decision to not make body camera footage from the involved officers available to be viewed by the public,” the statement from Attorneys Ben Crump, Bakari Sellers, Harry Daniels and Chantel Cherry-Lassiter read. “In this modern civil rights crisis where we see Black people killed by the police everywhere we look, video evidence is the key to discerning the truth and getting well-deserved justice for victims of senseless murders.”

“Just look at the murder of George Floyd — if the world had not seen that clear and disturbing footage, there might not have even been an ounce of accountability for those officers,” the statement continued. “We refuse to be discouraged and vow to keep the pressure on these agencies until we get to the truth. We will not stop saying his name. Andrew Brown Jr.”

On Wednesday (April 28), Judge Jeffrey Foster ruled that the bodycam videos can only be released 30 to 45 days after the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation completes its investigation into the deadly police shooting.

However, he stated that Brown’s son and one attorney will be able to obtain footage from four body cameras within the next 10 days.

On April 21, Brown, a 42-year-old Black man, was fatally shot by police officers in Elizabeth City, North Carolina as he drove away from authorities while they were serving him a search warrant. His death has sparked national outrage as the police department refuses to release footage of the shooting to the public. An independent autopsy revealed that Brown was shot five times — four in his right arm and one in the back of his head.

The FBI announced on Tuesday (April 27) that they will conduct a civil rights investigation into the shooting to determine whether federal laws were violated.
