Diddy reacts to ‘Two Distant Strangers’ Oscar win
“Words can’t describe how I feel right now,” he wrote of his second Academy Award.
Diddy, Joey Badass and Travon Free took home the Best Live-Action Short Film Award at the Oscars last night (April 25) for their short film, Two Distant Strangers. The award marked Joey’s first Oscar win and Diddy’s second award as a producer.
On Instagram, Diddy reacted to the win. The REVOLT Chairman watched the award ceremony at home with his mother and friends.
“I’m incredibly blessed to win my second Oscar as a producer. For Undefeated and now Two Distant Strangers!” Diddy captioned the clip. He jumped excitedly after the winner was announced and added, “Words can’t describe how I feel right now winning alongside my brothers. WE DID IT!!!”
On his Instagram Story, Joey shared a clip of his FaceTime call with Diddy after the announcement.
“I’m so proud of you!” Diddy said to Joey. “There wouldn’t have been no Oscar if it wasn’t for you!”
Joey stars in the film, which follows his repetitive trauma as he wakes up each day after being killed by a police officer. The film highlights issues of police brutality and institutionalized racism against Black Americans, which director Travon Free noted in his award acceptance speech.
“Today, the police will kill three people,” Free said. “Tomorrow, the police will kill three people. And the day after that… because on average the police in America every day kill three people, which amounts to about a thousand people a year.”
“And those people happen to disproportionately be Black people,” he continued. “I just ask that you please not be indifferent. Please don’t be indifferent to our pain.”
The film was also executive produced by Kevin Durant and Mike Conley and was co-directed by Martin Desmond Roe. Jesse Williams, Chris Uettwiller and Lawrence Bender have production credits on the project, as well.
