Back in January, Chip made a big return to wax with his latest body of work Snakes & Ladders, a 21-track offering filled with dope collaborations alongside Jme, Dizzee Rascal, Bugzy Malone, Headie One, MoStack, Young M.A, D-Block Europe, Stylo G, and more. One particular standout from Snakes & Ladders is “0420,” which is dedicated to late rapper Black The Ripper — a hip hop legend who unfortunately transitioned a year ago this month:

“Black passed on the fourth month in the twentieth year of this millenium, it’s spiritual, I’m tellin’ you … Black told me “Stick it”, I stuck it, Rhythm and the Rizla, I’m bunnin’ it, I see online they bringin’ me my flowers, now of course, if I could book a flight and leave tonight, I swear I’d bring you yours…/”

In celebration of 4/20, Chip decided to liberate his own twist on Drake and Rick Ross’ “Lemon Pepper Freestyle,” which sees him speaking on his career, struggles, and more — including his aforementioned friend and music peer:

“Every time I bill it, I see Black The Ripper, I ain’t gotta prove he was my fuckin’ nigga, Axe FM clashin’, they were fuckin’ wit’ us…/”

The freestyle also sees a simple-yet-very effective visual that shows a hoodie-wearing Chip rapping the multi-layered bars while having a smoke — Cadet, another star gone too soon, also receives a nod as well. Simply put, it would be virtually impossible to only press play on this one time.

Chip’s last official LP, Ten10, dropped in 2018 and saw assists from Frisco, Not3s, Red Rat, Kranium, and more. Outside of his solo work, last year also saw him teaming up with Skepta and Young Adz for the joint album Insomnia, a 12-song effort that peaked at number three on the UK Albums chart.

Put a lighter in the sky and press play on Chip’s “Lemon Pepper Freestyle” below.
