The Minnesota Timberwolves have dedicated their game ball to the family of George Floyd after former Minneapolis Police Officer Derek Chauvin was found guilty on all charges for his murder. On Tuesday (April 20), Timberwolves guard Josh Okogie said the team would dedicate the game ball from their match against the Sacramento Kings. “We had the game ball, we’re dedicating that to George Floyd’s family,” he said. “So, I’m glad we’re able to do that.”

His comments came just hours after the verdict was shared with the world. Chauvin was convicted on charges of second-degree unintentional murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter.

The jury only deliberated for 10 hours over a total of two days. Chauvin’s bond was revoked and he was immediately taken away in handcuffs after the decision was shared.

After the verdict, the Timberwolves and Minnesota Lynx released a joint statement about the judgment. “One year ago, George Floyd was murdered, causing unimaginable pain and trauma for his family, the Minneapolis community, and communities across the nation,” the statement read. “Our deepest thoughts have been with the Floyd family since this unjust tragedy. Throughout our history, racial and social inequalities have been ingrained in our society. We are hopeful that today’s decision will serve as a step forward, but it does not ease the physical and emotional pain that continues in an environment where systemic racism exists.”

“To our BIPOC community, the Timberwolves and Lynx remain committed to influencing change, promoting impactful action, and using our platform to help heal and unite in pursuit of liberty and justice FOR ALL,” the statement concluded.

Timberwolves center Karl-Anthony Towns said that even though people are happy about the verdict, it doesn’t erase the fact that Floyd is gone. “Just because justice was served today for Mr. Floyd, doesn’t mean that we’re going to be bringing him back home, and that’s the most unfortunate part of all of this,” he said.
