Former Minneapolis Police Officer Derek Chauvin has been found guilty on all three counts for the murder of George Floyd. The former cop is now convicted of second-degree unintentional murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter.

The 12-person jury — which was made up of six white people, four Black people and two multiracial people — concluded their deliberations on Tuesday (April 20) after hearing closing arguments from the prosecution and defense. After the verdict was read, Chauvin was taken away in handcuffs. His bond has been revoked and Judge Peter Cahill said that his sentencing will be held eight weeks from now.

Actress Kerry Washington took to Twitter to share her thoughts on Chauvin’s trial. “A guilty #verdict,” she wrote. “But this fight for justice is not over. We have a lot of work to do. There is more fight ahead of us. But RIGHT NOW please take CARE of yourself. And let’s take care of each other. Prayers and love to the family of #GeorgeFloyd.”

“The jury’s verdict delivers accountability for Derek Chauvin, but not justice for George Floyd,” tweeted Bernie Sanders. “Real justice for him and too many others can only happen when we build a nation that fundamentally respects the human dignity of every person.”

Stacey Abrams tweeted, “The evidence of our eyes met at last by accountability in the eyes of justice. #DerekChauvinTrial.”

White House Correspondent April Ryan wrote, “Historic Verdict: GUILTY on all three charges! This trial will have lasting implications on policing. And now, Derek Chauvin will go to prison and face the justice that many others weren’t afforded at the hands of bad cops like him. Justice has been served! #DerekChauvinTrial.”

“The overwhelming joy in my heart knowing that George Floyd is getting the justice he deserves for his senseless murder,” tweeted Karen Civil.

Yung Miami celebrated the news on Twitter, writing, “YESSSSSSS!! God is good!!! #GeorgeFloyd.”
