One of the Lousiville Metro Police Department (LMPD) officers involved in the fatal shooting of Breonna Taylor has inked a book deal, according to the Courier Journal.

Sgt. Jonathan Mattingly, the 48-year-old officer who was shot in the leg during the raid at Taylor’s home, will be releasing “The Fight For Truth: The Inside Story Behind the Breonna Taylor Tragedy” this fall. Post Hill Press will edit and publish the book.

The outlet first learned about Mattingly’s book on Tuesday (April 13) when he emailed a staff member asking for permission to use a photo from one of last year’s protests. In the email, the sergeant said he was still “in the process of writing.”

News of Mattingly’s forthcoming book was met with immediate criticism from people on social media. Author Kit Frick tweeted, “This deal is NOT OKAY. As an S&S author, I’m calling on the powers that be at @simonschuster to end your distribution agreement with Post Hill Press, the publisher of the Jonathan Mattingly book. Anyone profiting off of this deal is just wrong.”

“Friends, I encourage you to speak out about this to the publisher and distributor, as opposed to boycotting S&S books, especially those by BIPOC and other marginalized authors,” she wrote in a follow-up tweet. “Let’s express our outrage w/o negatively impacting underrepresented voices.”

“Someone explain how an officer enters the wrong address and is involved in the shooting of an innocent Black woman, not only not charged and convicted of this, but is allowed to profit from a book deal?” tweeted @theRealKevinTE. “Seriously, what the fuck?”

Twitter user @AuthorFarrah wrote, “So, Breonna Taylor can’t get justice, but Jonathan Mattingly, an officer-involved in her death, gets a book deal? He also…was the recipient of thousands of fundraised $, sued Breonna’s boyfriend Kenneth Walker and called protestors ‘thugs.’”
