The Minnesota Twins have decided to postpone today’s (April 12) game against the Boston Red Sox due to the fatal police shooting of Daunte Wright, which took place on Sunday (April 11) in Brooklyn Center, Minnesota.

“Out of respect for the tragic events that occurred yesterday in Brooklyn Center, and following the additional details in this evolving situation, the Minnesota Twins have decided it is in the best interest of our fans, staff, players and community to not play today’s game” the Twins said in a statement. “The decision was made by the Minnesota Twins after consultation with Major League Baseball, and local and state officials.”

“Information regarding the rescheduling of today’s game, and corresponding ticket details, will be released in the near future,” the statement continued. “The Minnesota Twins organization extends its sympathies to the family of Daunte Wright.”

As REVOLT previously reported, Wright, a 20-year-old Black man, was fatally shot by police during a traffic stop. His mother, Katie Wright, says he was pulled over because of his air fresheners. After learning that he had an outstanding warrant, he was placed in handcuffs.

“He said they pulled him over because he had air fresheners hanging from the rearview mirror,” his mother tearfully said. “A minute later, I called and his girlfriend answered, which was the passenger in the car, and said that he’d been shot.”

During a press conference on Monday (April 12), Brooklyn Center Police Chief Tim Gannon revealed that the officer who shot Wright accidentally used her gun instead of her taser. “As I watch the video and listen to the officer’s commands, it is my belief that the officer had the intention to deploy their taser, but instead shot Mr. Wright with a single bullet,” he said. “This appears to me, from what I’ve viewed and the officer’s reaction and distress immediately after, that this was an accidental discharge that resulted in the tragic death of Mr. Wright.”

Protests have since erupted throughout the city and several people have been arrested. The Minnesota National Guard has been deployed. Last night, the city was placed under curfew until 6 a.m. this morning (April 12).
